Submittal Exchange™ decreases risk on
South Dakota State - Harding Hall South project
"Submittal Exchange is more accurate than the traditional method because you only mark up one set of shop drawings, decreasing risk and the potential for errors when transferring redlines."

Brookings, SD - Completed last summer, the South Dakota State University - Harding Hall South project in Brookings, South Dakota used Submittal Exchange for submitting, reviewing, and tracking shop drawings and construction submittals electronically. The Submittal Exchange system was used by the entire project team throughout construction on the three-story, 30,000 square foot building, decreasing risk and helping the project to stay on schedule.
Prior to the SDSU - Harding Hall South project a number of team members had only been exposed to the traditional paper process, and they found the Submittal Exchange system intuitive and easy to use. Holly Mescher is a structural engineer with Banner Associates Incorporated, a 65 person engineering and architecture firm located in Sioux Falls South Dakota. "I think it's very easy to use and doing everything electronically is great. We are used to the traditional method, and Submittal Exchange has saved us time," comments Mescher. "Submittal Exchange is more accurate than the traditional method because you only mark up one set of shop drawings, decreasing risk and the potential for errors when transferring redlines."
"Submittal Exchange makes the process easy. Not only is the software great, the Submittal Exchange team is willing to aid us in technical support as well as configure the system to meet our preferences."
- Jason Pittman, Contract Administrator, Architecture Incorporated
Architecture Incorporated is a 25 person architecture firm in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. "Submittal Exchange is pretty self explanatory and is an easy program to use," states Jason Pittman, Contract Administrator with Architecture Incorporated. "Submittal Exchange makes the process easy. Not only is the software great, the Submittal Exchange team is willing to aid us in technical support as well as configure the system to meet our preferences."
The general contractor for the project is Hoogendoorn Construction, located in Canton, South Dakota. "I like the idea that I know where everything is and who has reviewed which submittals where and when," comments Bob Weerheim, Project Manager for Hoogendoorn. "The fact that submittals are available at anytime online for our team to view is very helpful."
The project team has discovered additional advantages of Submittal Exchange. "I think the ability to have everything online in one central location without mailings or hard copies is great. Just having that availability is worth quite a bit," states Weerheim."
Pittman comments, "Tracking RFP logs and additional correspondence online in one central location has been an asset for record keeping."
During the early phases of the SDSU - Harding Hall South project, the team could see long term benefits Submittal Exchange would bring when the facility was completed. "It is going to be nice having a CD with all of the submittals and close out documents when everything is said and done. Submittal Exchange will have definitely saved us time and money as well as reduced the paper burden," states Weerheim.
"If you value your expenses at all, you will see that Submittal Exchange is a better return of your investment." - Bob Weerheim, Project Manager, Hoogendoorn Construction
The team gives Submittal Exchange credit for reducing the overall expenses of the project. "Submittal Exchange has cut down mailing costs substantially. It also decreased the amount of time spent when items had to be expedited in the early steps of the project," notes Weerheim. "Saving time and courier costs has been a major benefit on the project, all parties have the ability to log on and look at the status from various locations which also cuts down phone calls and follow-ups."
"I have had to mark up six or more shop drawings that vary in length up to 300 pages, that takes a long time. Submittal Exchange just blows the traditional paper method out of the water," exclaims Pittman.
"I will be recommending Submittal Exchange to architects and others to try," comments Weerheim. "Submittal Exchange is very cost effective and is easily accessible to use. If you value your expenses at all, you will see that Submittal Exchange is a better return of your investment."
